The recently concluded G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting has produced an ‘Outcome Document and Chair’s Summary’ that highlights the group’s commitment to addressing food security and nutrition for all. The document acknowledges India’s significant contributions to the G20’s concrete initiatives in this area, including the Deccan High Level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition 2023 and the 12th G20 MACS international initiative for research on millets and other ancient grains. This recognition demonstrates the importance of India’s efforts in enhancing global food security and nutrition.
The meeting brought together representatives from the 20 member countries of the G20, invited countries, and delegates from 10 international organizations. The document emphasizes the need to tackle the worsening global food insecurity and escalating malnutrition rates in developing and least developed countries, despite the long-term increase in global food production to meet the demands of a growing population.
In line with the G20 Matera and Bali Leaders’ Declarations, the ministers reiterated the urgency of collaborative efforts to promote food security and nutrition. They expressed concern over high food prices, disruptions in global supply chains, and excessive price volatility of food and fertilizers. To improve food security and nutrition, the ministers emphasized the importance of diverse, safe, and sustainable nutritious food. They also encouraged initiatives to foster innovations in crop development, production, and consumption patterns.
Recognizing the significance of sustainable agriculture, food production, food security programs, and international trade in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda, the ministers underscored the need for strengthened international cooperation. They highlighted the importance of sharing experiences and insights regarding the use of digital technologies in agriculture and food systems, acknowledging the potential benefits they can bring.
The document expresses deep appreciation for India’s leadership in stewarding the agricultural agenda as the G20 Presidency in 2023. The ministers also expressed anticipation for Brazil’s upcoming Presidency in 2024, followed by South Africa’s in 2025, demonstrating the continuity of commitment to addressing food security and nutrition within the G20 framework.
The adoption of the ‘Outcome Document and Chair’s Summary’ at the G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting reflects the collective acknowledgment of the pressing need to address global food security and malnutrition challenges. It highlights the importance of international cooperation, innovative approaches, and sustainable agricultural practices to meet the objectives set forth in the United Nations’ SDGs. The G20’s commitment and focus on these issues provide hope for progress in achieving food security and nutrition for all.
